The young fellow is a rising star on a professional basketball team. He is especially deadly from beyond the three-point line and seldom passes up a shot.

The other night, he came into the game early in the 4th period. Sure enough, the first time he touched the ball, he fired off a shot, which missed.

One of the reporters said something like, "Bad shot. He should have passed it." The other, much older reporter said, "No. That's who he is. He should always be who he is. He will get older, develop other skills, but right now that's who he is and he is in there to be who he is. If the coach thinks that he is hurting the team, he will put somebody else in. But until then, he should just do what he does."

At their worst, sports are egoistic, shallow, narcissistic. At their best, some great life lessons can be learned. Enjoy the ride.
