Search the Scriptures?

37  And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38  And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39  Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40  And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.  John 5

Some of the saddest words in Scripture.  Consider:

1.  They thought they were the people of God, but they knew nothing about God. "voice" and "shape" are figures of speech, using material figures to describe spiritual things, as Paul tells us in 1Cor.2:12,13.  They did not understand the thoughts [voice] of God nor know His attributes [shape].

2.  The proof of this darkness is that they did not believe on Christ, who had been sent from God.  They did not have his word [wisdom] abiding in them.  Jesus is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, sanctification and redemption. 1Cor 1.

3.  They could discover these things themselves if they would "search the scriptures."  Scriptures mean the "writings."

The rich man's brothers could escape hell if they heeded the "writings."    They "thought" they had eternal life, but they rejected the root and fountain of life, the Lord Jesus Christ and knew nothing but death.  Because they did not find Christ, the wisdom of God, in the writings, they could only embrace an illusion of life, not life itself.  They were not told to seek the voice of the Spirit within, to think for themselves, to ask wise men, to examine the wisdom of the world.  "Search the Scriptures," for the Scriptures would have the answers to all their questions, for every word of God is pure.  Psalm 30:5.  The voice of the Spirit will always point you to the writings, or to one who knows the writings.

4.  How sad are these words, "And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life."   This settles forever the idea that man's will is free, for what free will would refuse to come to Christ?  There is no imperfection in Him, nothing that would persuade a free person not to come to Him.  The only reason that any man, woman, or child would refuse to come to Christ would be that they are bound in sin, under the power of the devil, in bondage to the deception of their own hearts.

“Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;”  (Eph 2:3-5 AV)
